Comedy is a kind humorous activity that puts smile on
people faces while watching it as film, by or listening to it from audio or
reading it from a text. Comedy can come through any media to the people who are
accessing it to have happy moments.
Comedy functions not only to put smile on people’s face or
to make them laugh, it goes beyond that. Precisely, the performer who is
performing the comedy may have something different at back of his mind before
planning or composing the comedy either to criticize or satirize someone’s
wrong doing or to make sarcasm.
When reading, watching or listening to comedy, the audience
may laugh or smile and later think about the comedy verisimilitude which deals
with something imaginative that seems to be true to life.
Therefore, comedy makes audience think and say something
reasonable about anything that has been scaring them.
In political affairs, there are many things that are calling
people attentions because of the critical conditions they are. When politics
supposed to be free, credible and fair, it instead grows to be miserable. When
democracy supposed to be a game of peace that makes people believe that the
government is truly their government, instead it is autocratic in favor of the
government agency only.
Those in power are no longer respect electorate who place
them there through their mass vote because of the trust they have in them that
the government position can be saved with them. They instead go ahead and play
authoritarianism and bit the fingers that are feeding them.
The rulers always
demand the ruled to obey and submit without consider what they need and this
act always serves as spectrum for the composers to utilize as a new subject in
their works.
Everybody is aware of
this and they are totally ready to preach transformation to the people through
comedy by satirizing them and make them laugh at their own misdeeds. Not only
comedians do this but also play writers and, prose authors, film writers and so
on.
In fact, people compose tragedy plays and songs to satirize
political affairs in the society not to abuse anybody but to make them think
deeply and to make adjustment that will favor not only them but the entire people
living in the society.
Sometimes in Africa, comedians dearly pay for the attempt the
make to correct social ills in the society by getting punished or attacked.
Factors that make comedy most effective in political affair
remains that largest percentage of population in the world prefer watching,
reading and listening to comedy and comedians to others like tragedy, songs,
and so on.
As the comedy is grown to propagate, the comedian’s
intention to satirize and to correct ill of the society is spreading to both government in positions and the ruled.
Comedy also entertains audience and makes them relax from
the emotional stresses they have been passing through from all the
circumstances surrounding them.
Apart from correcting authoritarian ambition, comedy can
also be instructional. It tends to be more effective in this aspect. Someone
who wants to transfer $5,000 to his girlfriend through mobile transaction but
mistakenly adds two additional zeros to make it five zeros and transfers $500,000.
And he admits the mistake painfully and starts crying
privately because he does not want to tell her about the mistake so that she
will not look down on him as someone poor.
This kind of comedy serves as vehicle for perfect social
change and to change poor mentalities of people in the society towards the way
they are handling things pertaining to their personal life and sometime the
entire society.
Prior to medieval period, comedy and other tiers of
literature have been mirrors through which society is reflecting by satirize,
mocking and criticizing people life style, politics styles, social norms and every
other thing pertaining to people.
Unfortunately, people who want to derive their comfortable
live from oppressing and making other miserable do not appreciate comedy.
Why? They find it as what can eradicate their ambition and make them feel
insecure or powerless by taking away their sense of power.
Meanwhile, there is no doubt that good leaders always
appreciate comedies.
